I’m Dr. Deborah Jenks
Emerging Futures uses John Kotter and Dan Cohen’s book The Heart of Change as the basis to initiate and focus change in you and your organization. Unless a person feels strongly in their heart how a change will benefit him or her, it is unlikely the change will be lasting. This is true personally and within many organizations. It is pure joy to help people thrive during their strategic shifts within their organizations and communities.
So how did we get to be here?
At Trinity College (Hartford), I designed my own interdisciplinary major – Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Italy. It included classics (including Greek), history, religion, literature, philosophy, and art. I blossomed during a semester in Rome! Thus, another interest – studying and experiencing different cultures emerged. My master’s degree at Drexel University was in Information Science. It included computer science, learning to process and categorize information, and management.

I learned system theory to see how all the parts of a computer program or project are related but come together in one plan. With skills in both technical and liberal arts, I could break down a system or complex problem to describe it simply to someone else. My writing and presentation skills were valuable! Even my doctorate at Regent University in Strategic Leadership was interdisciplinary. I studied how strategy can see into the future, to recreate the present. My systems background gave me models to discuss how things work, and can be improved.

It’s kind of interesting that the subject in high school I didn’t care for was Physics. At Regent, I discovered Quantum Physics, which shows how related objects in different spaces affect one another – this is called Quantum Entanglement. One friend describes this skill as an ability to see constellations when others only see stars.
My career has been eclectic. The good news is I have not taken the path well-traveled, but often created a path for others to follow (Ralph Waldo Emerson). It makes my resume interesting! This means that I am able to pull experiences from many disciples as I listen carefully to your story. I have been a teacher in a Montessori-like school, retail manager, graduate assistant for the Dean, project and program manager, software developer, quality assurance, principal in a consulting practice, published author, missionary, and a leader, teacher, and intercessor in several ministries. My 38+ years of experience includes non-profits, private, and federal organizations. I have led culturally diverse teams in several global organizations including overseas.
Through all of them, I streamlined processes while treating each experience as unique. One of the common threads is learning how to bring a project, system, or organization from a concept to reality. A huge key is managing the change process in a quality manner. The people side or culture is critical to get right. Even if the technical details work, if the final structures don’t interact well with people and other systems, ultimately it will fail.
The other thing I bring is the ability to listen to what is being said and not said; to intuitively discern the underlying reality. I like to say I am tuning to multiple frequencies at once. I have a solid foundation from a plethora of study and practical experiences. I may stretch you to think in new directions.
